In fact, this is my third pair of Loake shoes. The Loake Cagney is an Oxford-styled shoe which comes with polished leather uppers. The sole and insole are also lined with leather, thus making this pair of shoes extremely beautiful and comfortable to wear.

This pair of Loake Cagney is made in Loake’s factory in England and retails at £120 on Loake’s website. I got mine from P. Lal Shoe Store at RM599.00.

This pair of goodyear welted shoes comes in the F fitting with shoelaces. The shoe feels comfortable when walking, no doubt helped by the cushioned insole. No complaints whatsoever

Cheaney, Boot and Shoemakers was founded in 1886 by Joseph Cheaney in the little town of Desborough, Northamptonshire. As his business expended, he was joined by his son, Arthur in 1890 before moving to the present site in 1896. Business continued to grow and in 1903, Arthur’s brother, Harold joined the business. J. Cheaney & Sons was thus born.

The family shoe making business continued to grow and in 1930, Joseph Humphrey ‘Dick’ Cheaney, grandson of the founder, joined the company. Upon returning from his service with the Royal Air Force in the Second World War, ‘Dick’ Cheaney envisioned and pursued a policy of producing the most finely crafted shoes for export as well as the home trade, and this has survived to the present day. In 1966, Cheaney won the Queen’s Award to Industry and was sold to Church & Company plc.

In August 2009, William and Jonathan Church carried out a management buy-out of the Cheaney business from Church & Co, and they now own and operate the company. Both William and Jonathan are fully committed to producing footwear entirely made in England. The hallmarks of the production of the finest quality goodyear welted shoes continue at Church & Co.

Grown from a humble cottage in Northamptonshire, England, in 1880, Barker shoes have grown to an international reputation reknown for its modern methods of production whilst maintaining the same skills, traditions and craftsmanship which set the foundation for fine elegant shoes.

Specialising in the best goodyear welted shoes around, Barker shoes are beautifully designed and styled to suit the most demanding of customers. Albert Barker has widely been credited as the man who brought this brand to great heights. Employing skilled shoemakers and ensuring the highest quality control, Barker shoes supplied boots to the British army during the First World War. Needless to say, the brand has grown from strength to strength.

Barker’s goodyear welted shoes are sought after due to its hand-crafted design with some 200,000 pairs produced annually. Each pair of goodyear welted shoes deliver excellent insulation against cold and heat, good shape retention and a unique feature – easy to repair.

“Barkerwelt”, a special Barker version of the welted construction employs the cementing of the sole method rather than stitching to ensure a longer lasting pair of shoe. This allows for a closer sole edge and a lighter sole giving finer looking, more flexible sole – whilst still retaining the advantages of welted shoes.

It is not uncommon for such shoes to last for a good 5 years or more depending on how you care for the shoes.

For starters, having a pair of natural leather goodyear welted shoes obviously gives you better comfort and lasting compared to synthetic materials. Try to observe the following tips on shoe care:-

1. To keep the backs strong and stable, use a shoehorn when putting on your shoes. A strong and sturdy back helps to prevent against ankle injuries as well.

2. Avoid wearing your shoes in wet conditions during the first few occasions. When the shoe is new, it needs time to be conditioned to your feet and keeping it dry will help during this process.

3. Where possible, ensure that the shoes are given a day’s rest before wearing them again. Natural leather shoes require time to dry out through natural perspiration. Having two pairs of shoes or more to for alternate wearing would be best.

4. If shoes are wet, dry them naturally and away from direct heat. Do not place them near a heater as this will damage the leather. Stuff some newspaper into the shoe to assist the drying process.

5. Use a shoe tree to keep the shoe in good shape. This will also allow the shoe to breathe.

6. To prevent cracking, drying or excessive creasing, use a good-quality cream or wax polish regularly to moisturise the leather. Make sure the colour of the cream or wax is similar to your goodyear welted shoes before applying.

7. Engage a professional cobbler to replace the sole or heel before it wears out.

Shoes known as the Goodyear Welted Shoes fit this description.

The “Goodyear Welt” shoe construction is traditional method of the manufacture of men’s working shoes. Ingeniously invented by the son of Charles Goodyear, these shoes are handcrafted by highly skilled shoemakers, notably in Northamptonshire, England. It is no wonder then that the Goodyear Welted Shoes are in high demand amongst the discerning working men as it evokes a handsome look to the wearer.

Offering a constant flow of air through the shoes, the Goodyear Welted Shoes lasts longer than the ordinary dress shoe. The secret to the construction is that the upper is shaped over the last and kept secured through the sewing of a strip of leather or ‘Welt’ to the upper and inner sole. Upon completion, a sole is attached to the welt. A cork material popularly known as Flexofil is used to fill the cavity within the welt prior to the stitching.

Needless to say, only the finest quality materials are used for the construction of these shoes not to mention, time consuming. A unique feature of this type of shoes is that the shoes can be repaired by replacing the sole without damaging the other parts of the shoes.

It is no wonder that the Goodyear Welted Shoes are the preferred construction for highly reputable brands in the shoe industry such as Loake Shoes, Church, Grenson, Alfred Sargent, Crockett & Jones and Barker.
